Chapter 2: A Friend Must Be Congratulated

2. Past: 27 Days Ago

It was a lazy morning.

I had stayed up really late the day before. While it wasn’t like me to do anything, because it was before a holiday I had been reading a book and watching TV.

I woke up just before noon and nobody was in the living room. Although I knew that my dad would be at work, I don’t know where my sister could be. She may be somewhere in the house, or she may not even be in Japan anymore.

While letting out an unrestrained yawn, I sat down on the sofa with a thump. I reached over for the TV remote control placed on the low table.

For the time being, I tried changing the channels with the remote, but there didn’t seem to be anything particularly interesting on. Because I was still sleepy, the television sounded a little noisy. Since I had brought along a half-read paperback book from my room to read, I sunk into the sofa and turned a page.

Without reading even a single line, I raised my head from the book and muttered to myself,

“It’s dark, huh.”
